Organic foods are widely marketed as safer and healthier, but the benefits are not universally accepted. The claims fall into two separate categories.
Firstly – the potentially harmful effects of pesticides in our food. Organic foods carry far, far less of these pesticides and the vast majority of people believe that is a good thing. However, some toxicologists are not convinced that conventional food hold levels of pesticides that are harmful or a serious cause for concern.
Secondly is to do with the issue of whether organic foods are more nutritious. Some studies show organic food to contain higher levels of vitamin C, essential minerals and cancer – preventing phytonutrients. However, the differences are very slight.
