Consumers are choosing organic products in ever-increasing numbers, but there are a variety of reasons for them doing so, ranging from health to environmental concerns. A survey conducted recently provided the following revealing information concerning consumers’ motivations and choice of foods:

  • 29 % of people opted to eat some organic products.

  • The most popular organic product was fruit and vegetables, bought by 18% of those surveyed.
  • 10% of people occasionally bought organic meat, dairy products and bread.
  • Of those who did opt for organic alternatives, 60 % gave health as their main reason, while 50% also said that they were attracted by the lack of pesticides.
  • 46% thought organic food contained more vitamins and minerals.
  • 9% were worried about genetic modifications, and 6% were concerned about the link between BSE and vCJD.
  • 29% thought that organic alternatives simply tasted better than traditionally farmed food.
  • Only 8% ‘went organic’ because they thought the farming practices were better for the environment.
