Organic beer, wine and spirits are a much better bet than non-organic alternatives. The hops that are used for making beer are generally grown with nitrates, organophosphates, herbicides and fungicides. GM yeasts are also approved for use, and GM strains of barley are currently under development. Organic hops, however, are grown without any of these. The biggest manufacturers of organic beer are the Germans, who produce a higher yield of organic hops.
Organic spirits are now available and do not contain any GM ingredients or chemical flavourings and colourings.
Wine is not at present affected by the GM revolution, although research into GM wine is under way in the US, Australia and France. GM yeasts are approved for use, but are not widely utilised at present. However, sulphur dioxide (a preservative) is heavily used in non-organic wines, and vineyards are sprayed with a cocktail of chemicals, including fertilisers, pesticides and fungicides. Many non-organic wines contain traces of these chemicals. Organic grapes are grown according to strict organic standards, and are, it appears, less likely to cause hangovers!
